The plates used in the United States’ plate carriers are built to withstand the rigors of a journey, while offering the convenience of a carry-on bag.
But they also have one major drawback: they weigh nearly twice as much as the bags used in many other countries.
That means American plates carry far more baggage than those made in other countries and can weigh up to five times as much.
Here are the basics of the American plate carrier and what you need for everyday travel.
How much do American plates weigh?
The average American plate weighs about 1.3 pounds (0.86 kg) but American plates can weigh even more.
For instance, a 3-foot (0-meter) American plate, or a 5-foot by 7-foot American plate can weigh about 6.5 pounds (2.1 kg).
American plates are also heavier than European plates, which weigh 1.9 pounds (1.5 kg).
For more information on the weight of American plates, see our weight calculator.
What is the difference between a European plate and an American plate?
American plates have a wider base.
For example, an American 1-foot-wide (0 and a half meters) American plates is almost as wide as an EU-sized 3-inch (12.8 cm) European plate.
On the other hand, an EU 2-inch plate can hold up to about 3 pounds (3.4 kg) and an EU 4-inch can hold about 7.5 lbs (4.4kg).
The American plate also has a thicker base, which makes it easier to lift, and it’s much harder to drop than the European plates.
The plates that are used in Europe are made of metal, while the American plates come in metal- and plastic-covered steel.
Is there a way to carry plates with a weight limit?
The answer is no.
You can’t use a European or American plate as a carry on bag or even a carry in a plane.
The weight limit for carrying a plate with a carry limit is determined by the country of origin.
American plates will not carry more than 3 pounds when loaded on the front, or up to 8 pounds when placed in a suitcase.
An American plate that weighs more than 7.6 pounds (4kg) will not be allowed in the U.S. But if you have a weight-limit in place, it will be enforced.
The maximum weight that can be carried by a European-sized 2- or 3-liter (6.5 or 9.5 liters) European-style plate is 11 pounds (6 kg).
So if you weigh 11 pounds, you’ll have to pay a fine of $1,500 in the EU.
The limit is higher for a 3, 5, and 7-liter European-type plate, and 10 pounds for a 4-liter.
An 8-liter plate is prohibited in the US because it weighs over 14 pounds (5.7 kg).
How do I get an American or European plate?
You can buy a plate online from American plates and European plates can be ordered from the European Union or another European country.
You must bring your own carrier to check-in at airports.
If you are in Europe, you can buy an American-sized or European-size travel bag from a European airline or travel company.
For more info on ordering a European travel bag, see the FAQ section below.
Where can I find plates that weigh less?
American-size plates, such as American 1 and 2-liter plates, weigh roughly 10 pounds (7.2 kg) each.
European- or American-style plates weigh 10 to 20 pounds ( 4 to 6 kg).
If you order a plate from the U:American website, it usually comes with the carrier.
You’ll need to bring the carrier with you and take it to check in at the airport.
If it comes with a European carrier, the carrier is also available for purchase from the EU (for example, the European carrier for American plates).
For international flights, the EU carrier costs a little more, depending on the length of the flight and the weight limit.
The carriers that are available for use by the U.:American website are called EU- or EEU-sized carriers and cost about $15 each.
American- and European-length carriers cost about half as much, at $5 each.
What happens if the carrier doesn’t fit in my bag?
It depends on the size of your carry-only bag.
If your carry only bag has a maximum size of 6.8 by 6.2 inches (15 by 14 cm), then you will need to buy a European length carrier.
If the carry-all bag has an 8-by-10-inch length and weighs 10 pounds or less, then the EU length carrier will be the best option for you.
The EU-length carrier will fit in your carry bag and carry you to your destination safely.
